Beware of out-of-town storm chasers and unlicensed contractors!
When a large hailstorm hits the local area, storm chasers from all over the country swarm to town to prey on uninformed and desperate homeowners. Don't be a victim! As a homeowner, it is your choice who you hire for your restoration project. Cardinal Catastrophe Services is a local, licensed, bonded, and insured contractor that will be here long after all the out-of-towners leave. Whether you employ our services or another local contractor, we urge you to consider the following:
- Storm chasers will often offer to "waive your deductible" or even give you cash on the spot to sign their contract. In Illinois, it is against Public Act 97-235 to promise to pay or rebate any or all of your insurance deductible. On top of that, if your contractor is willing to do your restoration work for less than the market rate payed by your insurance carrier, what other corners will they be cutting? When your roof leaks and your call their "local" number, will it be disconnected?
- Storm chasers often don't have a local license and cannot acquire appropriate permits and inspections. If your project doesn't have a permit, it may get shut down in the middle of work. If it doesn't pass inspection, you may be liable for replacing the work. You can always check the license status of a contractor on the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation website.
- Roofing systems can be complex, and while all competent and licensed contractors will do their best to eliminate any possibility of leaks, we all know that things can happen. If you use a storm chaser and then subsequently have a leak in a couple of years, where will you turn? Their phone number will be disconnected, and even if you manage to get ahold of someone, they won't have a local license or crew to complete the work. This can result in an expensive repair that you will be responsible for.
